Ohjaajan nimi/supervisors: Josephine Moate (josephine.moate@jyu.fi), Kati Kajander (kati.kajander@jyu.fi), especially for students who would like to be supervised through Finnish

Aloitusajankohta/start date: Kevät 2024

Aiheet/topics:

1.  Foreign language education and/or bilingual education - This theme goes across the educational pathway from early childhood education, basic education to upper secondary language education. Research in this area often deals with questions of how students learn languages, what students gain by learning languages and how they perceive languages or language learning. Language education research often addresses questions of student and/or teacher agency, emotions and affordances as part of language education, student and teacher experiences. Current national curricula have provided an important space for the development of different forms of and innovations in language education.

2. Language awareness - language aware education recognises the importance of language in education for individuals and communities. Teachers and students use language in many different ways in educational settings, and how they use language has implications for what kind of community develops, how students experience education and how they develop through education. With the increasing diversity in educational communities, language awareness has an important role to play and while national curricula announce that 'every teacher is a language teacher' in practice this can be challenging.

3. Teacher development and innovation - Finnish education is often described as research-based drawing attention to the need for teachers to continue developing throughout their career in response to the changing educational landscape. Moreover teaching involves the careful consideration of the theory-practice relationship - something may sound good in 'theory', but how to ensure that it is good in practice? Or if something works well 'in practice', what does that mean? Introducing new innovations often requires commitment, learning from mistakes and trying different approaches. Research in this theme is an important opportunity to consider what research can mean for teachers and how different teachers seek to develop their expertise.

4. Dialogic pedagogy - the dialogic theory of Bakhtin draws attention to the importance of relationships, the formation of experience, the responsibility of the individual and the meaning of community. As dialogic approaches to education have been developed and shared in different educational settings, the importance of being sensitive to the particular conditions of different environments, the roles and opportunities of different participants and the values underpinning practice. Dialogic research often pays close attention to how education is enacted and experienced, as well as the interaction between different participants in education.

Muut aiheet/other topics:

Comparative education - while education is a globally recognised phenomenon, how education is understood and developed, the roots of different educational practices and understanding of education varies significantly across the world. With English as the language of international research, it is too easy, too often to assume that educators or researchers are talking about the same phenomenon, but there can be significantly different meanings and understandings. Comparative research is a good opportunity for the familiar to become strange in order to gain better insights into the nature of education.
