1. Datafication of education as a global phenomenon (new/pilot study)

DescriptionDatafication of education policy is a global phenomenon which roughly speaking means production and use of increasingly large amounts of digitally accumulated, stored and processed data when making (policy) decisions on educational matters (see here for a lengthier explanation https://codeactsineducation.wordpress.com/2018/03/17/10-definitions-datafication/)

This topic area offers several possibilities. You can collect and analyse policy documents of different international organizations (UNESCO, World Bank etc.) to understand the phenomenon of datafication on the so-called supranational level. In addition, or alternatively, you can examine what datafication means in specific national contexts choosing one or more countries for your analysis, employing policy documents, media materials (e.g. newspaper articles) and/or interview data (where possible).

2. Education in Russia (Russian language skills required); Russia’s role on the global educational arena

DescriptionLittle is known in Finland about how school education in Russia has developed in the years after the collapse of the USSR. Students with advanced knowledge of the Russian language are invited to study various topics related to Russian education. My particular areas of interest are citizenship education and political socialization (what kind of citizens the school is expected to nurture), assessment and accountability policies (graduation exams, collection of data on teachers’ work etc. ) and Russia as a returning aid donor country (what is Russia’s role in the context of the changing landscape of development aid in general and aid to education sector in particular).

It is possible to make use of my data on these topics (policy documents, curriculum materials, newspaper articles), but these data will most probably have to be supplemented with newer sources
