IV Exercises on Data Analysis

The exercises on data analysis are divided into two categories:

Exercise A applies to the student’s own discipline and research subject

Exercise B which requires either or both a broader and a theoretical discussion

IV 1 A) Choose a subject matter which you find interesting to research (e.g. the subject matter of your thesis). What could the research aim and the data be, if the research is reasonable and possible to make with:

a) quantitative analysis

b) qualitative analysis

IV 2 A) Choose a subject matter which you find interesting to research (e.g. the subject matter of your thesis). Get to know the data analysis methods introduced in the outer circle of the data analysis circle. Formulate three different aims (related to the chosen subject matter) and define the subject matter in a way that the research could be made with three of the data analysis methods introduced in the outer circle.

IV 3 A) Choose a subject matter which you find interesting to research (e.g. the subject matter of your thesis). Get to know the discipline-specific methods mentioned in the data analysis circle. Can you apply a method from any discipline other than your own to the research of your chosen subject matter? Give some examples or argue why using methods from another discipline is not reasonable.

IV 4 A) Choose a subject matter from your own discipline and formulate a set of research aims, in which it is reasonable to use one or more of the following:

a) The Delphi Method

b) phenomenological analysis

c) phenomenographical analysis

d) hermeneutic analysis

e) semiotic analysis

f) narrative analysis

g) close reading

h) Grounded Theory

i) network analysis

j) typification

k) thematic analysis

l) classification

m) descriptive statistical analysis

n) correlation analysis

o) causal analysis

p) time-series analysis.

IV 5 A) Choose a subject matter from your own discipline. How could the data on the subject matter be described statistically? In which kinds of aims is descriptive statistical analysis of the data reasonable?

IV 6 B) How do the orientations in philosophy of science related to quantitative and qualitative analysis methods differ from each other?

IV 7 B) Get to know the data analysis methods introduced in the outer circle of the Data Analysis circle. Discuss which data analysis methods, due to shared theoretical starting points or points of reference in the philosophy of science, are:

a) similar

b) totally different.

IV 8 B) Discuss how different analysis methods influence the researcher’s philosophy of science position.

IV 9 B) Get to know the data analysis methods introduced in the outer circle of the Data Analysis circle. Discuss which of the data collection methods and data analysis methods are compatible and explain why some collection methods and analysis methods are not compatible.

IV 10 B) Discuss which analysis methods are based on constructivism.

IV 11 B) Discuss the most popular currently used analysis methods in your own discipline. Which analysis methods were particularly popular in your discipline 20 years ago? Can you identify any change in either the use of analysis methods by your discipline? What explains the changes?

IV 12 B) Discuss any discipline-specific analysis methods in your discipline. What kinds of methods are they? Is it possible to apply the methods to the research of any other discipline?

IV 13 B) Discuss whether any general analysis method is applied by your discipline in an original way. Describe the use of the method by your discipline.
