In the humanities, qualitative research is often based on interpretation of the phenomenon through detailed analysis. Close reading is a broad category of interpretative explorations, which enable a researcher to carry out a detailed analysis of phenomena. Conceptually, close reading refers to analysis of words and interpretation of texts. However, researchers can apply close reading to various other phenomena, such as media texts, pictures and environments. Various discipline-specific methods may approach close reading in their analysis practices.
