Instructions for students on how to use Mapping Research Methods.

You can use Mapping Research Methods as either learning material in independent study or as support material when working on your thesis. You can navigate around Mapping Research Methods in various ways or just to know a particular section.

The structure of the content, the Method Map contains five separate areas. Each area is illustrated with a circle of a different colour. The areas are:

The relationships between the areas are illustrated through the circle of Aims. The various aims of research depicted in the circle function as links through which the different areas of methods can be perceived at the same time.

Mapping Research Methods enables you to view a variety of Method paths on which a research thesis could be based and thus, will help you to choose the methodological choices of your research thesis.

Mapping Research Methods offers outlines of methodological choices and guides you to seek deeper information on various research methods. If you are thinking of applying a particular research method as a result of using this web site, please gain a working understanding of the method through literature on the method.

Mapping Research Methods aims to offer you examples of the methodological choices in humanistic research. The examples given are not intended to prevent you from using other kinds of methodological choices. Innovative research may be based on untraditional and exceptional methodological choices. Successful innovativeness requires deep methodological understanding.

Mapping Research Methods does not aim to be an extensive illustration of all the variations of methodological thinking, but to give a methodological overview, which helps you to structure the knowledge related to research methods in humanities. The stages of research process are introduced in a separate link. The process is divided into four stages (1-4), through which you can gain access to further detail of each stage of the process. Research ethics are included in this section, as an essential part of the research process.

Mapping Research Methods also includes exercises, which you can use independently in order to clarify any problems with your thesis and to strengthen your methodological skills. The exercises are thematically categorized according to methods and stages of the research process.
