  • Use advanced search if you want to specify that you are looking for e.g. an author.

Watch the "course books" video in Moniviestin to learn how to find books.

How to search for books on a specific topic for your research

  • Use the advanced search in JYKDOK.
  • With the help of your information seeking plan, use the search terms you have found on your topic. Revisit search terms or creating a search statement, if necessary.
  • You might need to revise or modify your search terms as you conduct searches. This is normal and a part of the process.
  • To use truncation in JYKDOK, use *, e.g. parliament* will find parliament, parliamentary, parliamentarian. Using truncation will reduce accuracy.
  • Use quotation marks to get exact hits, e.g. "parliament act". This increases accuracy.
  • Words written in the search box will be automatically connected with AND unless you write something else, like OR, between the words, e.g. methods OR methodology
  • In advanced search, use the drop-down menus to select where you want your search terms to appear in the results, eg. All fields or Subject.
  • Once you get search results, you can use filters to narrow your search results.

  • Besides printed books, JYKDOK contains a large collection of e-books.

See instructions on how to read e-books!

    • You can find e-books in JYKDOK by searching with the title, author's name or topic. You can narrow your search results to books available online if this is relevant for your purposes.
    • There are several e-book services within JYKDOK. If you want to, you can also access the different e-book collections in JYKDOK and search for e-books within the specific e-book collection. Click the link that says "Database interface" to access an ebook collection.
    • In the e-book collection, such as Ebrary, you can often use full text search. In JYKDOK, full text search is not possible.
    • Note that some e-book collections will require you to create a free user account for the e-book service. Doing this will allow you to download books and use the different functions within the e-book service such as making notes or annotations and highlight text.
    • JYX - Jyväskylä University Digital Archive has dissertations & master's theses and other open access material. These can be found via JYKDOK, but you can also browse them in JYX.

How to locate and access books and e-books

  • How to locate printed books: In JYKDOK, a book's location information is at the bottom of the page where the book's information is. Click on the book's title and scroll down. On the right, next to the availability information, there's a link that you can click to get a shelf number and a map.
