Open science and research
Open science promotes the idea that research publications, results, data and materials are to be freely accessible for anybody.
Most academic information sources are restricted, and accessing them is subject to a charge, unless you have university credentials such as Jyväskylä university username and password. However, it is also possible to find e.g. open access scholarly articles in the internet. They are academic articles published online and made available free of charge for anybody, including the general public, outside universities.
Academic publications that are openly online are one part of open science. In addition, open science also has to do with making other parts of research, like research data, available for further use.

Open science and research is a way to promote science and to increase the visibility and the impact of science. Many research funding organizations require some sort of open access.

Google Scholar
- Google Scholar easily finds open access material e.g. from universities' archives, such as JYX archive in the University of Jyväskylä.
- Use Google to find e.g. blogs, wikis, discussions and news on your topic, as well as conference papers and documents by public organizations.
- If you search for open online material via Google, you have to use your discretion and evaluate your Google search carefully.
Even if a document is available openly online, remember that you still need to reference it if you use it in your own text. Instructions on How to cite are in the third section of Library Tutorial.
Open science principles at the University of Jyväskylä
The University of Jyväskylä promotes open science. The main objective is to advance open access to research results, research data as well as scientific methods.
The University
- requires that all research publications are self-archived in the university repository JYX.
- encourages publishing in open publication series in those fields of science where esteemed publication series exist. Purchasing articles open from subscription journals (hybrid model) is not recommended, unless specifically required by the research funder.
- requires that research data be deposited and, whenever possible, published on an open access basis so that they will be freely searchable and usable.
- encourages researchers to explain the methods used in the research.
- offers similar basic services to all research projects financed by supplementary funding for managing their materials, for the work of the research groups, and for publishing the research results on an open access basis.
- encourages researchers to actively inform the academic community about the research results and make the general public aware of them.
