Concept analysis means analyzing the meanings and relationships between the central concepts of your study. The topic of your study forms the basis for concept analysis, as it usually incorporates the most central concepts of the study.

Concept analysis and defining the conceptual framework for your study are necessary research skills. When defining a concept, you inform the scientific community what the concept means in your study. This can be done, for example, in the introductory section of your thesis, where you define the theoretical framework of your study.

In concept analysis, you will use at least two scientific sources, that use or define the concept you are using, possibly in different ways. In addition, you need to build a concept map or a mind map in which you visualize and organize your concepts in hierarchies. A mind map helps you to structures the different meanings of your concepts, as well as present synonyms and other concepts related to the main concepts.

A mind map helps you to piece together relationships between things. You may discover new interesting points of view, and new questions may arise. This way, you produce new understanding of your topic. This process produces terminology that you will need in systematic information seeking on your topic.

Concept analysis will be further discussed in different courses related to study skills, for example, academic writing courses provided by university language centre
