Data management plan

What is a data management plan?

As part of research planning, it is important to plan how to manage your data.  The aim is to ensure that your research data comply with the responsible conduct of research (RCR) and that the data will not be compromised at any stage of the process. At the same time, it is considered whether opening and later use of the data are possible. The data management plan also includes questions related to the processing of personal data.  In the research world, the data management plan is increasingly often a prerequisite for research funding.

Even if the data management plan were not compulsory for you, it is worth making. It enables you to ensure that your data are compiled appropriately and to tell the scientific community how you have considered compliance with the FAIR principles in your research data. Data management is part of research competence.

The Finnish Social Science Data Archive has compiled data management guidelines on the issues that should be included in the data management plan. Many of the materials on this course are based on the website of the Finnish Social Science Data Archive.

Various data management plan templates are available

One alternative is DMP Tuuli (DMP = data management plan) used by researchers.  If you use it, do as follows: after signing up for an account, start making a new plan (Create a new plan) and use the guidelines of the University of Jyväskylä for data management planning (Select guidance). You can also use the Tuuli DMP guidance (the Finnish guidelines start on page 6). Some funding providers can require the use of DMP Tuuli.  The plan made on this course is based on corresponding guidelines by the Academy of Finland

Your own data or archived research data?

Data management planning is essentially influenced by whether you

  • reuse archived research data or
  • collect your own, new research data and
  • produce data based on your primary data.

Many of the things to be considered in the data management plan concern above all the collection of new data. Reusing archived research data is actually easier in that most data management issues have been resolved already when collecting and archiving the data. The DMP can then be created more easily. On the other hand, familiarisation with the archived data takes time.

Information on finding archived research data is available on the Library Tutorial webpage research methods and data.

Data management is part of research planning

Before collecting your own research data, reserve enough time for carefully creating a data management plan. A carefully prepared plan enables the controlled solving of various issues related to data collection, processing, storing, and potential opening and archiving. Do the planning together with your supervisor as part of other research planning.
