To get started

When you have your topic for your thesis you have clarify your thema: What do you already know about the topic? What kind of general information there is available e.g. in scientific reference works/books via JYKDOK.

Before you begin your searches it is good to think how to manage your list of  references.  To help you with your citations and references, the University of Jyväskylä offers you the access to RefWorks, a bibliographic manager program.

Very important part of your work is Systematic information search with defining the topic and search and getting information about research methods and research support.

Databases in history and ethnology

Most important databases in history and ethnology are

  • JYKDOK Library library materials of Jyväskylä university: user interface to the printed and e-resources of the University Library. Basics of JYKDOK. Read Ebooks.
  • JYX - Jyväskylä University Digital Archive: dissertations,  master´s thesis,  digitized journals to originally electronic materials
  • Melinda the union catalogue of Finnish University and Polytechnic Libraries and a few other major libraries. It helps you to locate material, if it not belongs to the collections of Jyväskylä University Library
  • Historical Abstracts (EBSCO): a database of the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada), references of  journal articles, books, dissertations. Possibility to limit a search with historical period.
  • Academic search elite (EBSCO): multidisciplinary international eJournals service and database
  • JSTOR: multidisciplinary eJournals service full text  journals from the journal's first issue on (dating back to the late 1800's). The most recent issues available are at least 12 months (often 3-5 years) old.
  • MLA International bibliography (EBSCO) of languages an literature, including also folloristics
  • Google Scholar: A search engine specialized in scholarly literature. Searches across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations
  • Ebrary: multidisciplinary eBooks service over 110 000 books (history over 12 000, anthropology ca. 1 300)
  • Ebsco eBook Collection: multidisciplinary eBooks service over 120 000 books (history over 10 500, anthropology ca 3 000)
  • SAGE Research Methods Online (SRMO) a wide variety of materials of qualitative and quantitative research methods

Information on scientific journals

  • Use JYKDOK  to locate printed and e-journals. Write the name of a journal, e.g. Scandinavian Journal of History search for the name and choose Journals from the drop-down menu. It is possible  search for journals by subject or discipline. Write the name of the subject or discipline and limit your search to Journals by choosing it from the drop-down menu.
  • Journal Citation Reports (JCR): The database presents quantifiable statistical data, e.g. impact factors, that provides a systematic, objective way to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject categories. Business and economics journals, use JCR Social Sciences Edition
  • Ulrichsweb: A global source for periodicals information since 1932, covering over 290,000 journals, newspapers, conference publications, scientific monograph series etc. Use Advanced Search.
  • Web of Science - WOS: Enables users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from over 8,500 of the most prestigious, high impact research journals in the world.
  • Scopus (Elsevier): a comprehensive scientific, medical, technical and social science database
