The University of Jyväskylä Faculty of Mathematics and Science has four disciplines: Biological and Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and Statistics. In these disciplines the data creation is theoretical, hierarchical and cumulative, and the target of research is to find general regularities. The publication culture is based on scientific articles published in scholarly journals. The JU Library offers a large amount of journals, databases and other tools for information retrieval in the branches of sciences. To learn how to use the information resources efficiently, attend the hands-on Library Courses, or consult the Library Tutorial.

Location of collections in the fields of mathematics and natural sciences

At Jyväskylä University Library, basic collections in mathematics and natural sciences are housed in Mattilanniemi library, Ylistönrinne library and Ambiotica building. With the exception of course books, these libraries have most of the books, journals and theses in these fields.

    JYKDOK collection database

The JYKDOK database consists of several indexes. The two most important are:

    • Library's collections, the default index, contains information on books, journals and theses etc. in the collections of Jyväskylä University Library and University departments. Search types are the Basic Search and the Advanced Search. The call number of a result record shows the name of the collection and the headword according to which the book or journal is on the shelf. The headword may be the name of the author or the title of the book. In the JYKDOK database you can 1) check the availability of the material, 2) check your own loans and reservations or requests, 3) renew your loans, 4) place a reservation on a book which is out on loan, or 5) request a book or journal from the closed stacks. More about loans and borrowing.
    • International e-materials contains information on articles etc. materials other than included in the Basic Index. Via international search you have access to a variety of information resources, such as databases and e-journals from a variety of publishers and data vendors. Search types are the Basic Search and the Advanced Search. When available, the full text of an article etc. is linked in the search result record.

    Electronic resources

Electronic collections available at Jyväskylä University can be accessed via the JYKDOK collection database. JYKDOK and is an information retrieval system which provides end users with access to a variety of information resources, such as databases, library catalogues, e-journals and e-books. When you are using JYKDOK on a computer connected to the Jyväskylä University network, you have access rights to almost all the electronic resources avaliable in JYU. There are a few exeptions, eg. for CA SciFinder you have to be a registered user (details: Databases >Scifinder). For remote access to the e-material you have to have university's user account. More about remote access.

Consult JYKDOK-catalogue to find a book. JYKDOK includes both printed books at the Main and Campus libraries and most ebooks as well.

    Printed books

At the beginning of studies, emphasis in the use of literature will be on the course books mentioned in degree requirements. They are housed in the Mattilanniemi library. Course books in all subjects are in one alphabetically arranged collection. Short loan copies may be checked out as overnight or weekend loans.

Other than course books in mathematics and natural sciences are housed in branch and departmental libraries as follows: Mattilanniemi: mathematics, statistics; Ylistönrinne: chemistry, physics and biological and environmental sciences.

    Electronic books

Electronic books available at Jyväskylä University can be accessed via JYKDOK. For remote access to the e-materials you have to have an university user account. Instructions for remote access.

    Graduate theses

Graduate theses approved by the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and published before 2005 are archived at Ylistönrinne and Mattilanniemi branch libraries. Since 2005 most theses are published online, and can be found via JYKDOK and also via the JYX Archive. Information on how to search for theses.

    Electronic journals

Electronic journals available at Jyväskylä University can be accessed either via JYKDOK Basic search > Journals. Most journals can be accessed without a password only from computers in the University network. For remote access to the e-material you have to have university's user account. Instructions for remote access.

Open Access journals can be accessed everywhere. Eg. DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.

    Printed journals

Printed journals can still be found in the branch libraries. Check JYKDOK to see the location and availability of a printed journal.

At Jyväskylä University, the clients have access to dozens of databases in various fields on natural sciences. Well-represented subject fields include biological and environmental sciences and chemistry. The databases can be accessed via JYKDOK. Search for a database either individually or by subject category; see JYKDOK Help.

Most of the available databases are reference databases, which contain references to the actual documents. Most of the databases contain references with links to full-text articles.

    Multidisciplinary Databases and Search tools

Biological and Environmental Sciences  - Subject Specific Databases

    Chemistry - Subject Specific Databases

Mathematics and Statistics - Subject Specific Databases

    Physics - Subject Specific Databases

    Dictionaries, reference works

The multi-lingual and multi-disciplinary MOT dictionaries, the Oxford English Dictionary, Oxford Reference Online,  and Britannica Online among others, can be accessed via JYKDOK. Various reference works in natural sciences are available in printed form in the corresponding branch and departmental libraries.

    Depository Collection Fennica

Jyväskylä University Library is one of Finland's depository libraries. The Library receives all material printed in Finland. This material constitutes the Depository Collection which is housed in the Library's closed stacks, but the material may be ordered for use in reading rooms via JYKDOK > login to Hold and recall information.

    Managing references

RefWorks is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool, which is designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies for manuscripts.  Users create their own personal database by importing references from online databases, text files or manually. These references can be used in writing papers and RW automatically formats the paper and the bibliography in seconds. Registration needed.
