Kurssikansio KEMS813: Teollisuuden prosessit Tutustuttaa opiskelija suomalaisen teollisuuden tärkeimpiin prosesseihin, kuten metsäteollisuuden, perusmetallien valmistuksen ja kemian teollisuuden prosesseihin. Prosessiesimerkkien avulla tarkastellaan eri faaseissa kulkevia ainevirtoja ja muodostetaan prosessille ja sen osaprosesseille aine- ja energiataseita. Erityisesti selvitetään prosessien ympäristövaikutuksia ja energian käyttöä. Lisäksi käydään läpi prosessien kehitysmahdollisuuksia. Kurssiin kuuluu pakollinen harjoitustyö, joka tehdään taulukkolaskentaohjelmalla. The students will be familiar with the major industrial processes and understand the different technical phases and units of the processes. The process examples are from the basic metal production industry, pulp and paper industry and chemical industry. The environmental, energy and development aspects of these processes will be addressed. Heat and material balances will be calculated for industrial processes. Kurssikansio TIEJ659: COM7: Electromagnetic Signals from The Human Brain: Fundamentals and Analysis (JSS23) Non-invasive electromagnetic brain imaging methods, electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), provide a unique window to human brain function. The key advantage over other imaging methods is that MEG/EEG signals reflect neural signaling directly and with excellent temporal resolution. However, estimating the spatial distribution of brain activation from MEG/EEG data requires advanced signal processing techniques and a solution to the neuromagnetic inverse problem. This course will cover the characteristics of cerebral electromagnetic fields, their measurement, and their analysis, with emphasis on physics and mathematical modeling. The lectures will encompass the generation of neuromagnetic and -electric signals, physics and instrumentation of MEG/EEG, signal processing and mathematical modeling of the acquired neuromagnetic data,  and the latest advances in estimating synchrony and causality between electromagnetic brain signals. tiistai 02. heinäkuuta 2013, 08.50

Kurssikansio MATS578: MA2: Inverse Problems in two Dimensions (JSS23) The inverse problem of Calderón consists in determining the electrical conductivity properties of a medium from voltage and current measurements on the boundary. Mathematically, this reduces to an inverse boundary value problem for an elliptic partial differential equation. We will explain a few recent results in dimension two concerning the Calderón problem, when the background space is a Riemann surface. Kurssikansio MATS577: MA1: Multiwave Imaging (JSS23) Multi-wave imaging methods, also called hybrid methods, attempt to combine the high resolution of one imaging method with the high contrast capabilities of another through a physical principle. One important medical imaging application is breast cancer detection. Ultrasound provides a high (sub-millimeter) resolution, but suffers from low contrast. On the other hand, many tumors absorb much more energy of electromagnetic waves (in some specific energy bands) than healthy cells. Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) consists of sending relatively harmless optical radiation into tissues that causes heating which results in the generation of propagating ultrasound waves (the photo-acoustic effect). Such ultrasonic waves are readily measurable. The inverse problem then consists of reconstructing the optical properties of the tissue from these measurements. In Thermoacoustic tomography (TAT) low frequency microwaves, with wavelengths on the order of $1m$, are sent into the medium. The rationale for using the latter frequencies is that they are less absorbed than optical frequencies. Transient Elastography (TE) images the propagation of shear waves using ultrasound. Multi-wave imaging methods lead to a rich supply of new mathematical questions that involve elliptic and hyperbolic partial differential equations. Kurssikansio FYSV421: PH4: Using Language to Teach Science: Researching Classroom Communication and Developing Dialogic Approaches (JSS23)   Teaching and learning science is a complex activity where language has a central role. Language is a tool to communicate concepts, to construct them and to articulate interactions in the classroom.  Developing an efficient use of language is, therefore, one of the main aims of teacher professional development.  This course will introduce: Theoretical ideas on the relation between language and learning Research-based insights on how language can be effectively used for the teaching of scientific concepts Basic tools to enable teachers to research the use of language in their classroom All these elements will be brought together to provide a model for dialogic education in science, which aims at promoting deeper conceptual understanding. Kurssikansio KEMV998: RE1: Biogas Technology for Renewable Energy Production and Environmental Benefit (JSS23) This course presents the fundamentals and most recent developments in biogas technology for sustainable renewable energy production. Anaerobic microbiology, biochemistry and reactor design are described as well as the application of biogas technology in municipal and industrial waste management, and in industrial-scale energy production from agro-wastes and crops. The concept of biogas production from food waste as second generation biofuel source, including collection, pretreatment and process optimisation, is presented with consideration of its energy and mass balance and carbon footprint for sustainability criteria. Kurssikansio KEMV996: CH2: Solid State NMR Spectroscopy in Materials Chemistry (JSS23) The course introduces the basics of solid-state NMR spectroscopy from a practical rather than theoretical perspective, yet encompassing relatively advanced and recent techniques. It illustrates what and how structural information may gained by solid-state NMR experiments, with emphasis on applications to materials chemistry, in particular inorganic materials. Kurssikansio FILA510: Ethics of Global Responsibility Aims and content: The course studies the nature of collective ethical problems, which differ from “paradigmatic” ethical wrongs (such as physical violence) where the violator, the wronged party and the causal relationship between them is easy to establish. In issues like climate change, global poverty and inequality, the basic socio-economic structure of a society or the world order, or an oppressive culture, the nature of the violation is harder to grasp. What do considerations of justice, solidarity or responsibility require concerning these kinds of issues? What is the role of individuals or different collective agents, movements and institutions? Kurssikansio KEMV989: RE2: Optimization of Bioenergy use The objective of the course is to give an overview of current bioenergy use and how to optimize future utilization. State-of-the-art technology in bioenergy will be reviewed, including: current topics of research and development, future aspects, unresolved problems and needs for further research. The lectures will be divided into the following topics: Future of bioenergy, bioenergy production in small scale, torrefaction, biomass combustion in fluidized beds, pellet production and use, gasification with related biorefineries and transport fuels based on biomass. Also the formation emissions and techniques for their minization will be discussed. Completing the course includes an exam at the end of the course and a homework exercise. Kurssikansio KEMV992: CH2: Determination of Solution Phase Structures Although solid-state structures, determined mainly by crystallographic methods, continue to be one of the major methods for the determination of three-dimensional structures of molecules and complexes, in many cases these methods are not applicable due to the lack of suitable crystals. In these cases, the best alternatives involve the determination of solution phase structures by a combination of NMR methods and molecular modeling.
